Dog Stop Signal
Is it only necessary for your dog to know as many commands or signals as he needs. For some, this is sit, drop, stay and a release word. For others there might be the addition of take, leave, jump, fetch, roll-over etc. But one command which could save your dogs life is ‘stop’. Even if your dog has a strong stay, ‘stay’ is a command for when your dog is already stationary. But teaching him to ‘stop’ is for when he’s on the move. Perhaps you need him to stop for the curb or he is about to approach a dicey situation. Practice first ‘on leash’ until he is confident. If you have off-leash control with your dog, then practice ‘stop’ off-leash too. Then you can increase the distance from which the command is given and increase the challenge by giving a command after the stop has been achieved e.g. Stop. Down.
