Stop teaching your Dog bad behaviours
When a pet behaves badly, the solutions to stopping this behaviour can be frustrating. Here’s some tips on how to make your pet into a better behaved furry friend.
Often Dog Training is more about teaching the Owner new ways to re-enforce good behaviour not about training your Dog! Believe it or not, just like with people, you teach your Dog how to treat you.
The more your Dog rehearses an annoying/bad behaviour, the more likely your Dog will perform it again & again. Try to avoid all situations that will create your Dog’s unwanted behaviour to prevent the wrongful “self-teaching” of bad behaviour.
Try taking the problem away from your Dog or, remove your Dog from the problem.
For example, if your dog barks continually at your back fence, I would suggest erecting a midway fence or barrier that keeps your dog in the back yard but away from the stimuli. Double slatting your fence is a great idea or use shade cloth or the like, that acts as a cover so your dog cannot see the stimuli will help improve the situation.
If your dog is annoying visitors, remove your Dog from the visitors before they arrive.
It’s too difficult to manage a boisterous Dog and to greet your visitors simultaneously. Place your dog in a comfortable room (eg laundry or garage), den or crate with a Kong or bone before the visitors arrive to distract your dog.
Introduce your Dog to the visitors later on when your Dog is in a calm state of mind & has time to de-sensitise to the visitors being in your home. Don’t allow any jumping up on your guests and ask your visitors to help with your training by staying in a calm assertive state and not to make eye contact at first or to raise their voice with excitement, which in turn would raise the excitement of your Dog.
Its time to stop teaching your Dog bad behaviours. Your goal should be not only to have their Dogs Love but also their Respect.
