What is the best lead to walk my Dog on?
Halter-type collars will give you the best control over your dog and are the most comfortable to wear. Just like a bridle on a horse, controls the head, therefore controlling the horses direction. Halti’s give you control of your dog’s head and when you have control of the dog’s head, you have control of the dog. These halti’s really do work on the same principle as a horse halter. A smaller and slighter built person can have really good control over a larger breed dog or a strong willed dog without causing injury to themselves. When you pull on your dog’s leash, the dog’s head will either be pulled in a downward motion or to the side, which makes it difficult for the dog to move ahead or pull you forward, or worse pull you over. The halti also has the benefit of being able to control who your dog listens to by enabling you to make eye contact with your dog and remove their attention away from distractions around them on your walk. The problem is, that most people give up too easily when in training with a Head Halti, because the dog’s natural instinct is to resist at first by pawing at his face to try and get the halti off and sometimes even performing the odd crocodile roll and scooting his face along the ground BUT please persist, even it takes a couple of weeks of training, as the rewards are huge! I always suggest a positive association when trying the halti on your dog, like just before meal time, place it on your dog, so he gets use to the feel of it and then feed your dog with it on. Or you may like to try some treats. Whatever you do, you must continue momentum during the walk using positive praise. Iif your dog tries to get the halti off, I can’t stress enough – don’t give up, just walk through it, raising your dog’s head up if he tries to roll and momentum, momentum, momentum! You will never look back once you use the head halti and you will enjoy your walks so much more. Good luck!
